Cross' illustrations successfully create a cozy, country world for this gentle animal-as-human fantasy using soft colors and lots of details that children will enjoy. His Dudley has an endearing personality and is often humorous. Story and pictures include clever visual and word plays. The book design reinforces the inviting tone of the story, incorporating text nicely into the overall design and varying size and arrangement of the pictures to fit the pace and events of the story.
