From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Millie tells in a very matter-of-fact style of her three-year-old cousin Tucker's visit while his parents go off on a trip. She is excited that she will have a pretend baby brother who will love the way that she takes care of him. As soon as Tucker's parents leave, Millie's wishful scenarios are put to test. When Tucker begins to cry and she puts her arms around him, he kicks her in the stomach. When he wakens from a nap, he spits at her. Even when Tucker dumps his pudding on Millie's head, she accepts her mother's explanation that Tucker was only having fun. Millie's big sister patience begins to wane. Her mother's excuses don't change what she feels. (Mom and Dad should take a few lessons on the difference between helping a child to adjust and adjusting to the child.) By the end of the evening, Millie's frustration becomes resignation and indifference to this bratty, obnoxious kid. But when a crying Tucker crawls into bed with her during the night, she knows that he does love the way she takes care of him. Millie is a sensible, likable character. Expressive, humorous scenes use inviting, warm colors to illustrate this delightful read-aloud story about two only children. --Ellen Dibner, East School, Long Beach, N.Y.

From Publishers Weekly:
This book has such a poignant, true-to-life quality that it either came directly out of real experience or is the product of a remarkably sensitive imagination. In either case, the story is a joy to read. Millie, an only child, is looking forward to playing "big sister" to her cousin, three-year-old Tucker, when he comes to spend the weekend. As soon as Tucker's parents drive away, though, he dissolves into tears, which he alternates with devilish antics. Readers will suffer along with Millie as all her friendly gestures are rebuffed until at last she has her moment: a tired and lonely Tucker crawls into her bed early in the morning. Both author and illustrator are perfectly in tune with Millie's desire to help and Tucker's inability to settle down with strangers; this joint effort handsomely conveys the spirit of family life. Ages 4-8.
