For 17-year-old Hellene Ariadne, being evacuated in wartime means missing all the excitement. While Quebec and the Western States pursue their conflict with laser light raids, the teenager tends younger evacuees in neutral Victoria. Then her mother, Hydra Corp executive Medea, is arrested for treason. Returning home to Denver Springs, Ariadne encounters intrigue and romance as she becomes pivotal to the fates of her family, the corporation and the Western States themselves. For all its futuristic trappings, this reads like the tongue-in-cheek adventure of a plucky Victorian heroine; Ariadne's beau, royal equerry Joss Liddell, even turns out to be working undercover for Scotland Yard. Ariadne, unfortunately, is never more than a pleasant silhouette, and readers will likely admire the authors' resourcefulness more than the character's. Willis wrote the excellent novel Lincoln's Dreams.

Signed, with no personalization or inscription, on its title page by author Connie Willis. This book is in near fine condition, marred only by a tiny notation in black ink on the top right corner of its front end paper (possibly a former owner's initials), a light bump on its cover's back bottom corner, plus a narrow 1.5" bump in the middle of the right edge of its text block (causing a short shallow crease on the right edge of the first 90 pages.) Its binding is sound and square, with no spine crease. Its covers are unmarked and otherwise unworn. Its pages are unworn and otherwise unmarked. Not a remainder. Its dust jacket, now protected by a removable mylar cover, is in near fine condition: whole, bright, and unworn, with some light foxing on the bottom edge of its back flap but otherwise unmarked. I will ship this book in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure it reaches its new owner in the same condition as my description. Signed by Author(s).
