Carlo Collodi (the pen name of Carlo Lorenzini) was born in Florence in 1826. His parents were servants and the family was extremely poor, but Carlo was fortunate to have his education paid for by a wealthy aristocrat and became a successful author and translator. He published several novels and satirical works as well as popular translations of many traditional fairy tales. He died in 1890, unaware of the lasting legacy of his most famous work, The Adventures of Pinocchio. Illustrator Robert Ingpen studied illustration and book design at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. In 1986 he received the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his contribution to children's literature, and he was honored with the Membership of the Order of Australia. He lives in Barwon Heads, Australia.
