Famous as a master of the lithographic technique, Toulouse-Lautrec produced prints that include book illustrations, menu cards for private events, and large-scale posters advertising popular entertainers of his time. His energetic style and inside view of Paris night life in the 1890s are especially evident in these 78 impressive color reproductions. Adriani's extensive discussion of various versions of each print, his informative notes identifying individuals that Toulouse-Lautrec depicted, and his inclusion of illustrations of more than one version of some prints make this catalogue a valuable resource. Adriani, who also wrote Toulouse-Lautrec ( LJ 3/1/88), writes with authority and precision. Despite a meager bibliography, historians will appreciate his scholarship and artists will appreciate the illustrations.
