Grade 5-8 The biography of Bethune, a great educator, black leader and advisor to many, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, is a warm story that gives a good view of a slave's life both before and after slaves were freed. Bethune's talents are well described, but her humanness shows through. Mary McLeod Bethune (Crowell, 1977) by Greenfield is a simpler but also excellent story for grades two to five. Born in 1857, Ida Tarbell was a pioneer journalist and biographer. Her exposure of the Standard Oil Company helped to dissolve the trust. Her determination and constant searching for the truth are well illustrated. This biography is slightly more simplistic and one-sided than the Bethune story. Yet, as it is full of information about trusts and American history, the book is well worth reading. Photographs and letters in both books are excellent, and time lines are helpful, covering not only the subject's life but also major world events of that time. Indexes are thorough.
