About the Author:
Hiawyn Oram is the author of over sixty books for young readers and has been praised for her "on-the-mark understanding of childhood emotions" (Publishers Weekly). Sam Williams has illustrated over forty picture books, including Cold Little Duck, Duck, Duck, by Lisa Westberg Peters. Both Ms. Oram and Mr. Williams live in England.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-A familiar premise with engaging illustrations, this pleasant picture book may remind readers of John Prater's Again (Barron's, 2000) and Martin Waddell's "Big Bear/Little Bear" titles (Candlewick). Mrs. Brownmouse and Little Brownmouse enjoy a day of typical activities (a walk in the woods, cooking and eating dinner, taking a bath, and reading a bedtime story), punctuated by low-key pranks. Whether shouting "BOO!" and "AARGH!" or splashing water and tickling, both mother and child join in the play-the first time. When Little Brownmouse asks each time to "do that again," her mother's response is always the same-"Hmm, not now." This pattern repeats until the end, when instead of accepting her father's offer of another mild scare, the mouse child opts instead for "a great, big good-night hug!" This feel-good ending, like Mama's patience, isn't entirely believable, but it might please those who like their stories extra sweet. Luckily, Williams's pictures are light and charming. There's a nice variety of full-page, vignette, and double-page illustrations with many amusing details to pore over and enjoy. From the stove made of a lit candle and an overturned flowerpot to the cozy bedroom-slipper bed, young children will recognize many familiar objects put to new uses. Indeed, the appeal of the art, which appears to be executed in watercolor and pencil, will likely make the book popular with young listeners despite the slight text.
