Reviews

Unlike Hilda Hutcherson's Having Your Baby: A Guide for African American Women (LJ 4/15/97), which is written from an obstetrician's point of view, this book is an inspirational resource rich with the magical wisdom of African midwifery. Though Harlem pediatrician Brown and former Essence editor Toussaint have consulted with experts on everything from diet to labor to infant care, their advice is backed by information on the nurturing traditions of African and Caribbean folklore. The result is a more well-rounded treatment of the birthing experience than can be found in Hutcherson or similar works. With hundreds of photographs and illustrations and "Insider Tips" on making lifestyle decisions on money matters, maternity and paternity leave, home safety, and much more, this book not only brings expectant parents through the birthing experience but helps launch them into positive parenting. Highly recommended.?Rebecca Cress-Ingebo, Fordham Health Sciences Lib., Wright State Univ., Dayton, Ohio
