Madhuri Sharma embarked on writing her memoirs at her husband's encouragement, her literary objective being to draw her readers into a "world of immigrants, through the eyes of an immigrant." The first part of this delightful, colorful book deals with her family's arrival in the United States from the southern city of Chennai, India in the 1970s, after months of "personal contemplation and my husband's desire to seek out newer pastures and a better life in distant lands." On their exciting journey, they experience humorous, heart-warming and sometimes challenging adventures, as they make every effort to embrace the culture of their new home. From getting a substantial job in America and learning which of their cultural ways to shed and which to keep, to raising two daughters in a society vastly different from India, the family's new home in "the land of opportunity" proves to be "a long road of continued education and adaptation." The second part of Through the Eyes of an Immigrant memoir focuses on the family's travels to numerous countries, including Italy, Spain, Finland, and Germany, which enabled them to further widen their horizons, invigorate their psyches, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow travelers. The third section, entitled "Reflections," consists of short personal essays on "the greatness of America" as well as the currently ingrained weaknesses in the American system, which, in the author's opinion, should be addressed in a timely fashion. Otherwise tarnishing of the American Dream could become a real possibility.
