Engineer, inventor and entrepreneur, Bruce Del Mar was born in Pasadena, California in 1913, five years before the Armistice ending WWI. His early fascination with aircraft and flying led to an engineering degree from the University of California, Berkeley where he developed small teams of engineering students to work at Douglas Aircraft Company® during summer breaks to help finance their way through college. Working at Douglas after graduation, Bruce developed the method for pressurization of aircraft cabins that allow people to fly comfortably above 10,000 feet. He continued to develop aircraft and weapons systems throughout WWII. After a 15-year association with Donald Douglas, Bill Lear, Jack Northrop, and many others both in and out of aircraft design, Bruce started into business on his own with Del Mar Engineering Laboratories® which later became Del Mar Avionics®. With his team building abilities at their peak, Bruce gathered some of the best and brightest to help design unique aerial weapons training systems, helicopter trainers for the military, and a Precision Load Positioner called the Hydra Set®. His skills were once again requested, this time in the cardiac medical equipment arena. Through his entrepreneurial spirit, he led the development of one of medicine's most revealing diagnostic devices for recording human ECG for which he is most well known for, the Del Mar Avionics Holter Monitor®. For over 40 years, the name Del Mar® has been associated with leadership in the advancement of Holter monitoring technology and improvements in the fight against heart disease, America's number one cause of death. This is Bruce Del Mar's unique story of his experiences during the golden age of development in the twentieth century and the lessons he learned that led to a lifetime of success that continues well into the twenty-first century.
