Folk lore and literature speak of Heaven and Hell having one thing in common, a gate at the entrance. We all have one foot in the gate at one time or another, the question is which gate. The author, John Grimm, found the diary of a struggling woman artist in a bookstore in Steinau, Germany. The cobble stone streets and brick buildings had been there long before the diary was written. The shelves were filled with dusty books by the dozens, most of which had not been opened for years. The author was drawn to the cloth covered diary, edges frayed and corners bent. The first entry in the diary was dated 1801. It is the true story of what has been known for over two hundred years as a popular children’s tale. Selected passages of the diary have been quoted in italics to reveal how one life can touch another in a very profound way, even though separated by centuries.
