The author, editor of the British Journal for the History of Science , begins his treatment of the 19th century with the French Revolution and ends with the outbreak of World War I. This period was one of increasing specialization in science, and an epoch during which scientific ideas came to dominate the culture. Knight covers the growth of all branches of science from psychology to chemistry. He also addresses national differences that have colored scientific philosophies.
