About the Author

Ian Woodward Falconer (1959–2023) was an author and illustrator of children’s books, including the beloved Olivia series, and a designer of sets and costumes for the theater. He created thirty covers for The New Yorker as well as other publications.

PreSchool-In Counts, sketches in charcoal and gouache depict the piglet with one ball, two bows, three pots of paint, etc., up to a final spread of 10, with Olivia performing different stunts and in different outfits or accessories. In Opposites, she wears a long evening dress and a short tutu; is intimidated by a loud lion before bellowing back; appears in a plain pair of red briefs, then is decked out with fancy red heels, bows, lipstick, and jewelry. Of the two, Opposites is totally engaging; Counts is an additional choice for young fans.

Children's NOTES Learn with Olivia What better way for toddlers to learn the basics than with two board books starring Ian Falconer's Olivia? Youngsters start with one ball at the beach (in the signature red-and-white stripes) and finish with ten Olivias jumping rope, doing handstands and sprawling on a beach towel in Olivia Counts. A red numeral accompanies each scene. In Olivia's Opposites she demonstrates word pairs with comic flair (for instance, she models a scarlet evening gown for long and a red tutu for short). Both feature b&w and red illustrations from Falconer's Caldecott Honor book, Olivia, and its companion, Olivia Saves the Circus. (June)

PreS. Popular little Olivia is as delightful when demonstrating concepts in board books for the very young children as she is in her usual picture-book format. As in previous outings, charcoal-drawn Olivia learns and plays against a white background; dabs of lipstick red highlight the fun. In Counts, the little piggy holds one red-and-white beach ball, wears two red bows, and shows off seven red accessories on a double-page spread. Sometimes the pictures are all monotone. The final spread shows 10 Olivias in action--jumping, hammering, sunbathing--fun for new counters to enjoy. Opposites is even easier for young children to grasp. "Long and short" features Olivia in two dresses of different lengths. "Coming" has Olivia on a scooter moving into the spread; "going" features her on the edge of the spread scooting out (while doing a handstand). Clever! Ilene Cooper
