Thomas K. Adamson has written dozens of nonfiction books for kids on sports, space, math, and more. He lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with his wife and two sons. He likes reading and playing ball with his boys. He also likes to check scores and stats on his phone.

Donald Lemke works as a children’s book editor. He has written dozens of comic books, including the Zinc Alloy series and the adventures of Bike Rider, and many chapter books for DC Comics. Donald lives in Minnesota with his beautiful wife, Amy, and their not-so-golden retriever, Paulie.

Here s a case in which a curriculum-related series (Graphic Science) puts the graphic-novel format to good use. Narrative and images nicely interplay to show the how and why of such basic safety practices as wearing goggles, calling for help when accidents happen, and avoiding contact with unknown substances. The titular character is a buff, bald African American, whose commanding presence is as engaging as it is pedagogical. The science experiments students are shown pursuing as the text moves along are suited to upper-elementary and middle-school curricula. The resources noted for further information are up to date. This will be a good choice for science classes during the opening weeks of the school year. Solid science and decent graphic-novel style illustrations are the basis for the series.  In Forces and Motion, to represent motion, some of the illustrations are blurred which may be off-putting to some.  The More About section of each book sums up the topic.  Inset boxes address vocabulary, interesting facts, and famous people.  Web sites are accessed through FactHound.  The action and story line are easy-to-follow, even for those not raised on graphic novels.  These should be a welcome addition to a collection and will be enjoyed by students who like graphic formats, science, and ESOL and Special Education populations.  Bibliography.
