Mathew Brady recognized that the new art of photography could be more than just a means of capturing people's likenesses in portraits. Beginning with the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861 and continuing through the entire Civil War, Brady and his employees chronicled the long, bloody conflict, bringing images of war directly to the people. Brady knew the photos would create valuable historical records for later generations. More than any other photographer of his generation, Brady understood photography's great potential and through his influence, he taught others to understand it as well.

About the Author:
Noted historian and award-winning author Don Nardo has written many books for young people about American history. Nardo lives with his wife, Christine, in Massachusetts.
From Booklist:
*Starred Review* The latest titles in the excellent Captured History series once again view history through the lens of groundbreaking photographs. Photographer Mathew Brady brought the atrocities of the battlefield directly to the American people, as documented in Civil War Witness: Mathew Brady’s Photos Reveal the Horrors of War. The cover depicts three Confederate prisoners after the Union victory at Gettysburg, but the title doesn’t focus exclusively on this single image. With a clean design and readable text, plus the vivid and haunting photos, the Captured History series makes events in the past feel immediate and palpable—and what better way to get kids interested? Stellar back matter, too, including tips on how to apply Common Core standards. Grades 6-9. --Ann Kelley
