About the Author

Dayton O. Hyde is a cowboy and rancher, rodeo rider and clown, photographer and author of 15 books on cowboying, fishing, and natural history. In the 1980s, Dayton witnessed some of America’s last wild mustangs being rounded up and sent to slaughter; it pulled at the old cowboy’s heart strings, and he vowed to do something about it. In 1988, he established The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary near Hot Springs, South Dakota, an 11,000-acre ranch to protect wild horses. Long held sacred by the Cheyenne, Lakota, and other Native American tribes, the area is a place where visitors can view the Wild West as it was.
Rita Summers and Charles G. Summers, Jr., have been photographing wildlife around the world since the 1970s. Their work has been published in numerous books and magazines, including Audubon, Backpacker, BBC Wildlife, National/International Wildlife, Kid City, Kosmos, Living Bird, National Geographic, National Geographic World, Natural History, Nature Conservancy, Orion, Outdoor Photographer, People, Ranger Rick, and Sierra. They live in Parker, Colorado.

Reviews

As founder of the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary and a lifelong rancher, Hyde offers heartfelt, passionate essays that perfectly complement the work of photographers Rita and Charles Summers. Internationally renowned for their images of wild horses, they present work here that is nothing short of astonishing. Hyde knows his subject, first from a personal standpoint, as illustrated in his opening essay about the wild horses he revered as a boy in Oregon, then as an international observer, as chronicled in his essays on zebras, France's Camargue horses, and the wild ponies of Chincoteague immortalized by author Marguerite Henry. Hyde peppers the text and photo captions with fascinating information about wild horses and explains the history behind federal laws governing wild-horse herds and his own efforts to maintain a place for them to safely roam. There is no better book for horse lovers or anyone interested in the horse as an icon of the American West. Colleen Mondor
