Topics presented include the difficulties of flying to and landing at the poles, scientific research done at each pole, and the challenge of human survival in the extreme cold. The word Life in the title apparently refers to people, as wildlife receives little mention here. The last page features a bibliography, an index, and a note on Goodman and photographer Doolittle, who contributed about one quarter of the clear color photos used in the book. Children will need to look elsewhere for maps and more complete information, but this overview will fit nicely into larger library collections. Carolyn Phelan

Grade 3-5–This appealing collaboration takes readers on a tour of the world's ice landscapes, primarily Antarctica. The pages are filled with large, beautiful photographs; the text is in large black type on a white background; and sidebars are set in blue ink. The book discusses the nature of the extreme climate, the planes that fly there, the scientists who study it, and what it takes to live in this environment. Back matter offers more information on the planes and the Poles and briefly mentions the animals.
