Author Steven Kroll is the author of many beloved picture books for children, including Pooch on the Loose: A Christmas Adventure, illustrated by Michael Garland, The Biggest Pumpkin Ever, illustrated by Jeni Bassett, and A Tale of Two Dogs, illustrated by Mike Reed. He lives with his wife in New York City and Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Illustrator Doug Holgate lives in Melbourne, Australia.

K-Gr 1 When his family sees a sign for a Flying Contest, little Drago wants to compete, but his parents and older siblings remind him that he can t fly. Determined, the youngster finds a bird to give him lessons. The little dragon practices every night and becomes particularly adept at figure eights. On the day of the contest, it is expected that he will watch while others fly. However, when the final event, the Figure Eight Contest, is announced, Drago cannot keep his feet on the ground, proving that high aspirations and perseverance pay off. While the plot is simple and predictable, the superhero image is sure to draw children to it. The text is presented in word balloons or inset boxes. The sweeping strokes, bold curving lines, and bright colors of the artwork will appeal to fans of animation and graphic novels. --School Library Journal, May, 2011

Grades K-3 Being a little dragon doesn t mean you can t do great things. Drago is very sad when he learns that he is unable to compete in the upcoming dragon contest because he can t fly, so he begins taking flying lessons from a bird. Practicing secretly with his new friend, Drago learns to fly, becoming particularly adept at figure eights. On the day of the big dragon contest, Drago saves the day when his older family members falter. Kroll s straightforward text and Holgate s vivid pictures make for a pleasant story.
