Grade 4-6-Using computer-generated images, this atlas supposedly gives children an idea of what Earth's landforms look like from above, free of clouds, ice (for the Northern Hemisphere, at least), and the distortions of standard flat projections. As shapes on the maps' rims must be foreshortened to maintain the illusion of depth, the whole idea is fundamentally nonsensical-which the authors tacitly acknowledge by quickly dropping the premise, superimposing color coding, political boundaries, labels, and arcs of latitude and longitude upon their 18 large, and several dozen smaller, hemispherical pictures of the planet. Still-information in the labels, captions, and systematic descriptive text is current enough to include the recently renamed Canadian province of Nunavut; a plethora of ground-level color photos, though postage-stamp sized, are sharp and bright; and the small maps add useful views of ocean floors, tectonic plates, climate zones, and the like. A classroom globe will convey Earth's appearance more effectively, but for its glimpses of and below the surface, this volume could profitably sit nearby.
