Synopsis

A loony, lively pop-up lullaby invents a litany of zany excuses to put off going to bed, including such reasons as an owl behind my towel, a gnu in my shoe, and a skunk in my bunk.

Reviews

PreSchool-This short, funny book is full of pop-up, lift-the-flap, and pull-the-tab surprises. Just when parents think they've heard every possible excuse for putting off bedtime, there are some new ones: there's "a boa in the bathroom" (it's actually coiled up in the toilet, and pops up when the lid is lifted), "a skunk on my bunk," "an armadillo in my pillow," and others, none of whom want to go to bed, so how can the small (not depicted) narrator manage? The problem is solved when Gnu announces that they do indeed want to go to bed. "And there's room for you, too." The illustrations are typical Pienkowski-wide-eyed, laughing, crudely cartoonish creatures in bright, primary colors crowd the narrow pages. The final spread shows a relatively quiet, dark blue pull-the-tab scene in which all of the open eyes close, leaving a set of white teeth gleaming cheerfully in the moonlight. As a "pop-up lullaby," this may fall short-the tone is a bit too boisterous and energetic. But as a comical book meant to make children laugh about silly excuses (and perhaps invent a few more of their own), it has its own kind of appeal.
