From Booklist:
Ruthie the rabbit hates her new coat. It's a hand-me-down and entirely too big. She doesn't believe Mommy's promise that she'll grow into it. It takes her friend Fiona to show Ruthie that the coat is perfect. It's big enough for dancing, playing monster, and playing "Danger Poisonous Mushroom!" Best of all, it's wonderful for "the biggest-ever case of the Big Old Coat Giggles." After the girls almost have a bathroom accident because the coat zipper gets stuck (a scene that will give some youngsters giggles of their own), Ruthie's mom decides the coat is too big and old. By this time, of course, Ruthie has come to love it. This charming, earthy story, illustrated in cheerful, bright colors, shows all the fun two friends can have when they put their imaginations to work. Marta Segal
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2-Ruthie has a coat-a big, red, hand-me-down from her cousin Frances. Although her mother assures her that she'll grow into it, the little bunny is not so certain. Luckily, her friend Fiona notices that it's big enough for two. So, they dance and play and pretend until they get the giggles, and then-Ruthie has to go to the bathroom. Unfortunately, the zipper sticks, so the race to the toilet is on. This story is based on a real incident in Lacome's childhood. The charming acrylic-and-gouache illustrations are colorful and quirky, but the plot is linear and weak. At the beginning, the book seems to hold great promise, but sadly, it ends up being just another potty joke.
