The small trim size is more suitable to a novel than an art survey, and the pages suffer from cramped layouts, with frequently too-small type shoehorned in between images. Spence’s clear language, though, will help students grasp the methods, ideology, and transcendent power behind Monet’s work, while intriguing details, such as how the 1841 invention of the collapsible paint tube aided artists’ ability to work outdoors, add interest.
