Synopsis
In a small town, everyone knows everyone else’s business. But in Brindle, Oregon, there’s a secret nobody wants to see.
Todd Fielding, a newly married young woman, comes to Brindle for a job with the local newspaper, which plans to celebrate the town’s centennial by printing photos and letters from the town’s history. But the relics of the past hide a dark secret. When a young girl disappears and no one in the town appears particularly concerned, Todd looks deeper. She uncovers the shocking fact that five other girls have run away from Brindle under strange circumstances over the past twenty years, but no one seems interested in finding them. About the Author
Kate Wilhelm is the bestselling author of dozens of novels and short-story collections. Among her novels are the popular courtroom thrillers featuring attorney Barbara Holloway. Her other works include the science fiction classic Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang. Born in Ohio, she now lives in Eugene, Oregon.

Here's one of those special novels in which the narrator and author are clearly in sync. Todd Fielding, a newlywed who has just moved to Brindle, Oregon, quickly discovers that there are dark secrets enveloping the community. Anna Fields's reading is an ideal complement to the book. Fields has a strong, sometimes deep voice that meshes well with the story, especially during the scenes in which Fielding searches for the murderer who has taken the lives of many young girls. When narrating other books, Fields's voice has at times seemed too deep or not deep enough for key characters. But in this one, her style fits, resulting in a captivating performance.
