Grade 10 Up-This addition to a series that includes Kimberley McGrath's World of Biology (1998) and Robyn Young and Suzanne Sessine's World of Chemistry (2000, both Gale) features approximately 650 entries on a broad range of topics from explanations of the most recent developments in embryology and developmental biology to profiles of pioneering scientists. The introduction encourages students to start with a careful reading of the "Anatomical Nomenclature" entry and diagrams in order to familiarize themselves with the terminology. The unsigned articles, from "Abdomen" to "Rolf M. Zinkernagel," range in length from a few paragraphs to a few pages and include cross- and see references. The small typeface may be difficult for some users to read. Black-and-white photographs, charts, and diagrams are scattered throughout; the same 16 color plates illustrating the various systems appear in centerfolds. Volume two concludes with a bibliography that includes Web sites, a chronology from prehistory to 2002, and a 91-page general index. Many of the biographical entries can also be found in Notable Scientists: From 1900 to the Present (Gale, 2001). However, Anatomy and Physiology is a convenient and accessible resource that will serve as both a ready-reference and research tool and should be considered for libraries fielding a number of questions on these topics.

This reference provides basic information on human anatomy and physiology. The 650 alphabetically arranged entries, ranging in length from several paragraphs to several pages, are written at a level accessible to high-school students and the general reader. Topics covered range from classical human anatomy and physiology to developmental and reproductive biology. Examples include Amino acids, Blushing, Breathing, Endocrine system and glands, Gene ther apy, Sexual reproduction, Sleep, Space physiology, and Veins. Lengthy biographies of about 200 famous as well as lesser-known scientists, among them Francis Crick, Herophilus, Rita Levi-Montalcini, Susumu Tonegawa, and Otto Heinrich Warburg, are also included.
Black-and-white line drawings and photographs supplement the text. Sixteen color plates illustrating topics such as basic anatomical nomenclature, the circulatory system, and the endocrine system are inserted in the center of both volumes. (Excellent detailed anatomical illustrations are available from MEDLINEplus: Anatomy [http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/anatomy.html].) Cross-references to related articles, definitions, and biographies are provided. Other features are a 15-page bibliography that lists worthwhile books, articles, and Web sites and a historical chronology of significant events in the advancement of anatomy and physiology. A comprehensive 91-page index provides subject access to the contents.
Although primarily aimed at high-school students and general readers, this reference source could also be of use to undergraduate students in introductory courses. It is recommended for high-school, public, and academic libraries. RBB
