Synopsis

When cautious Emma Roberts leaves her lonely mother's home in London to venture to Paris, she finds a reliable diversion from her studies of seventeenth-century garden design in a captivating new friend, Franoise Desnoyers. Soon, free-spirited Franoise welcomes Emma as a guest in her family's beautiful mansion. However Emma is not too dazzled to ignore the tensions that exist between Franoise and her formidable mother, or between Mme. Desnoyers and her other guests. When a horrifying episode puts an end to Emma's fascination, she begins to understand the compromises and challenges in love and life that she must come to accept.

Reviews

Joanna David certainly has the right cultured British accent to read one of Anita Brookner' signature tales of love, loss, and solitude. Thankfully, in addition to the perfect accent, David possesses a firm delivery and well-modulated voice that fortify the listener. Brookner's novels have a dreamy quality and often seem devoid of dialogue; and however fascinating her investigations of the heart, the reflective passages risk dragging, even for the most devoted fan. But David reads purposefully and crisply, keeping both characters and listeners going forward. She also subtly varies her pacing, which enlivens the writing almost as dialogue would and helps keep listeners attuned to the story's themes.
