""The most scholarly and thorough overview to date of one of America's richest libraries.. The present catalogue of 100 French manuscripts, ending with the rise of English rule in France, is an admirably equipped research tool, striking a judicious balance between codicology and art history and supplying the reader with concordances, an index of incipits, etc. The entries are of varying length, and their leisurely pace yields rich pickings." -- Speculum

Seller: Wykeham Books, LONDON, United Kingdom
Cloth, mounted cover illustration and gilt cover-title, 4to,31 cm, xxvi, 386 pp, colour plates. From the introduction: " Entries are presented in chronological sequence, beginning with codices produced for ecclesiastical use between the ninth and the early thirteenth century (Cat. nos. 1-14). The next group, which consists of Bibles of various formats and degrees of luxury, reflects the increased demand for this text inspired in large part by the emphasis on biblical studies at the University of Paris from the early thirteenth century on (Cat. nos. 15-28). Service books are represented by ten examples dating between about 1240-50 to 1412. They include four Breviaries (Cat. nos. 19, 48, 60, 88), three Missals and a leaf of a Missal (Cat. nos. 41, 56, 67, 77), a Processional (Cat. no. 66), and a Pontifical purchased in 1986 (Cat. no. 81). The above-mentioned interest of laics in owning books of private devotion is evidenced by thirteen Psalters, thirty-two Books of Hours, and two leaves from a Book of Hours. Leading stylistic developments are most fully represented in this group, which includes examples illuminated or influenced by such masters as Jean Pucelle, Jacquemart de Hesdin, the Lugon Master, the Boucicaut Master, and the Bedford Master. Parisian illumination is most fully represented, but the collection also contains fine examples of book production from northeast France, Champagne, Lorraine, Franche-Comté, and Provence. A final category in this volume consists of sixteen miscellaneous works that include a Papal Indulgence (Cat. no. 63), four works for ecclesiastical and scholastic use (Cat. nos. 44, 46, 51, 52), and a series of vernacular texts composed of a Rule of the Knights Templar, works based on the Bible, a moralized treatise, four chronicles, and a romance (Cat. nos. 36, 50, 53, 61, 62, 64, 65, 72, 74, 79, 80, 96)."
