Synopsis

Victor McKusick's Mendelian Inheritance in Man (referred to as MIM), now in its twelfth edition, is a standard reference book for geneticists who need information on genetic disorders and the genes involved. Containing nearly 9,000 entries grouped according to mode of inheritance, the book is based on information in a continuously updated, online database (referred to as OMIM).

Now John Mulvihill has extracted from OMIM the approximately 700 entries associated with cancer and grouped them according to the organ system in which they occur in the human body. The entries are reproduced from OMIM as of December 1998. For each entry, Mulvihill has written a note on those features of the disorder that are of importance to oncologists. His goal is to make the latest information from this valuable genetics resource available to clinical and research oncologists.

One in three to four persons will develop cancer in a lifetime (apart from common skin cancer, which affects one out of two). Some of these cancers clearly run in families; others are traceable to toxic agents in the environment; while still others develop for reasons not yet understood. It can be said that every person's cancer arises from an inherent susceptibility and resistance to a cumulative lifelong history of personal and environmental exposures. This volume enumerates the hereditary traits and genes that seem to alter the risk for cancer in humans.
