In 1952 several Dutch nuns from the avant-garde Congregation of the Ladies of Bethany went to Rome to help promote ecumenism. Their base was the Foyer Unitas where they cared for the needs of non-Catholic visitors to Rome. They provided information about the city and its monuments, they gave guided tours and offered guests the hospitality of their house. From the first they served the cause of ecumenism by trying to make both ecclesiastical and secular Rome transparent to their visitors. They played an especially crucial role during the Second Vatican Council when they hosted members of the non-Catholic delegations.
The forty years of Foyer Unitas provide and informal footnote to Church history and the ecumenical movement that should not be lost. Many thousands of visitors found a welcome at the Foyer Unitas and experienced its pervasive spirituality. This is a special book that can inspire our lives.
