A man with haunted eyes appears at Julie Ferguson's office and asks her to keep a package in her safe overnight. Recognizing him as Dale Lahrman, a friend of her late father, Julie agrees. While she is away from her office, an intruder breaks into her safe and steals the package, leaving a small golden trinket in its place. Before Julie can notify the police, an officer appears at her door. He tells her Lahrman has died under suspicious conditions. Lahrman's daughter, Cinda, arrives at Julie's office to find her father. Learning he is no longer alive, she lcaims she knows who is responsible for her father's death. Cinda hires Julie to clear her father's name. Julie, still aching to find out the truth about her own father's death, takes the case. In Walla Walla, Julie uncovers a trail of graft and corruption that has been hidden for many years. As Julie digs deeper, she receives threatening telephone calls and anonymous letters. Similar golden trinkets turn up in odd places. But when someone hides in the bushes and fires a gun at her, Julie decides she'd better find the culprit before it's too late.

About the Author:
Betty Archer is the author of short stories appearing in national publications including Ellery Queen Magazine. Tokens of Deceit is her first novel. She lives in southeastern Washington State. Her early years were spent in Walla Walla, the latter in Richland. She has used both sites in her writing. The author and her husband reared one daughter and four sons on a twelve-acre nut orchard adjacent to the Yakima River. When she is not writing or reading, she enjoys working in her garden.
