This beautifully illustrated two-volume set provides a facsimile of Fuchs's herbal (originally published in 1542 and reproduced here for the first time), together with a volume of in-depth interpretive commentary on its organization, content, influence, a biographical sketch of Fuchs, and a chronological listing of his published works. All 511 woodcuts of plants in the are identified with their modern botanical names. The commentary contains about 150 illustrations (100 in color) that include contemporary hand-colored figures from printed copies of the herbals and woodcuts produced under Fuchs's supervision for a projected elaboration of the original reference. Meyer is Botanist Emeritus of the U.S. National Arboretum. The late Emily Emmart Trueblood edited and translated the , a 16th-century Aztec herbal. The late John L.
