"Black Means..." is designed to give new positive meanings and depth to the word "black" and to counteract many of the negative uses of the word that have persisted so long that they have become staples in our language. The book is the result of the collaboration between Principal Barney Grossman, teacher Gladys Groom, and the students of P.S. 150, an elementary school in a predominantly black and Puerto Rican community in the Bronx, New York. Discussions were held in all the classrooms of the school to elicit from the students their feelings about the word "black." Charles Bible’s illustrations have brought the students’ images to life in twenty-seven vivid and expressive drawings. A final note in the book suggests that the young reader add his own definitions and drawings to this dictionary of the meanings of black.
