A palace overlooking Venice's Grand Canal, once the home of Peggy Guggenheim, houses her enormous collecion of avant-garde painting and sculpture. Picassos and Calders stand beside works by other American and European innovators such as Cornell, Pollock, Appel and Man Ray; Cubism and abstraction are well represented; Surrealism is explored in paintings by Magritte, Ernst, Brauner, Miro, de Chirico. Dubbed "Italy's modern art museum," this collection rivals that of New York's Guggenheim Museum. (Both the Venetian and NYC museums have been administered by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation since Peggy's death in 1979.) This massive tome, the first complete catalog of the Venetian palazzo, includes 86 handsome color plates, 700 duotones and a critical appraisal. The very dry commentaries on the plates, concerned with influences, media, stylistic matters and so forth, will mainly interest scholars. But the artists' testimonies on the meanings of their own works are intriguing. Mark Rothko, for example, notes that his abstractions were inspired by Greco-Roman myths; and Yves Tanguy's surreal dreamscapes were influenced by a French writer's exploration of paranormal phenomena and extraterrestrial life. This lavish and hefty volume establishes itself as the catalog to date of a most important and influential collection of 20th-century art, surpassing, most notably, Lucy Flint and Thomas Messer's detailed Handbook ( LJ 10/15/83). Although Rudenstine's substantial catalog also has a complete list of the collection that includes a majority of works not fully studied by her, the catalog information and discussions of 177 chosen works, arranged alphabetically by artist, that form the bulk of her text should stand as the basic and essential reference source for many years to come.
