For the first time, the architectural history of the town of Lexington and its two nationally distinguished campuses has been appraised in a scholarly fashion. This Valley of Virginia community, together with Washington & Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, presents exceptionally fine examples of American architectural styles from the late Eighteenth to the early Twentieth Century. A remarkable number of architects of national reputation, including Thomas U. Walter, Alexander Jackson Davis, and Bertram G. Goodhue, completed important work here. A special feature of this volume is the documented research on Nineteenth Century architectural books. This investigation of Lexington's architecture is fully illustrated with photographs by Sally Munger Mann as well as early photographs printed by her from the original Nineteenth Century glass negatives. This new study places the noteworthy buildings and their designers within the context of the architectural development of the Valley region and assesses their role in the evolution of the nation's styles.
