Perhaps the best way to describe the book is simply to call it ''complete yet compact.'' With less than a hundred pages but more than fifty illustrations, there are visual aids for each step in the process the author explains. Techniques for preparing surfaces, sketching, mixing egg tempera, gilding, lettering and finishing are carefully explained along with examples from the history of Byzantine and Russian iconography. The author includes lists of required tools and materials used at his own studio in London. For working iconographers who wish to transfer from acrylics to the organic materials used by the original icon writers, this is an invaluable resource. The Technique of Icon Painting will certainly inspire anyone to a deeper appreciation of the skillful labor behind behind the sacred art.
