The interrelationship between music and literature continues to be a field of growing interest. This groundbreaking study examines the extensive use of musical allusion and imagery found in the novels of contemporary British novelist Iris Murdoch. Focusing primarily on eight novels that span Murdoch's thirty-five year publishing career, Darlene Mettler's investigation explores music in all its disparate forms and suggests a fascinating and innovative approach to the brilliant canon of Dame Murdoch.

Review:
«This is an utterly fascinating exploration of an important new dimension of Iris Murdoch's fictional worlds. All students of Murdoch's brilliant novels will be in debt to Darlene Mettler for such a rich and rewarding study.» (John J. Burke, Jr., President, Iris Murdoch Society)
«Darlene Mettler's study of Iris Murdoch's fiction plunges to the heart of Murdoch's version of intellectual and artistic life in contemporary Britain; no previous book so profoundly investigates the uses of music and other arts made by one of the great novelists of our time.» (Ted R. Spivey, Georgia State University)
«Darlene Mettler's 'Sound and Sense' is a thoughtful study of a previously unexplored area of Murdoch's fiction, and an important contribution to Murdoch criticism.» (Jill Hague, Middle Tennessee State University)
«Mettler notices how often music 'upsets' and 'distresses' Murdoch characters. Murdoch often gives her own characters something of her own emotional generosity and reponsiveness, and Mettler has some interesting comment on and analysis of this species of sensitivity.» (Peter J. Conradi, Iris Murdoch News Letter)
