John W. Reps is the author of many books, including St. Louis Illustrated, Views and Viewmakers of Urban America, and Washington on View. He is Professor Emeritus of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Eminent urban historian Reps (Washington on View, LJ 1/92) takes us on an incredible upstream voyage of the mighty river as perceived by 19th-century artists and writers. More than 200 exquisite reproductions, mostly color, of the artists' detailed drawings depict "bird's-eye views" of the cities and towns that lined the river in the last century. (Lithographs and engravings produced from these drawings were used to illustrate books and magazines, decorate homes and public buildings, and publicize the communities.) These images are complemented by extracts from travelers' journals, guidebooks, gazetteers, and Mark Twain's droll observations and by striking aerial photographs that duplicate the artists' panoramic views and document the urbanization process. Although scant biographical information exists on the artists, Reps provides a carefully researched, ample text. A superb acquisition for libraries coast-to-coast.
