About the Author

Dr. Ruth Westheimer is the internationally renowned author of many books, including the paperback edition of Heavenly Sex: Sexuality in the Jewish Tradition (Continuum, date TK), which Library Journal observed "will be helpful and welcome to Jews and non-Jews alike." She is always on the go, making TV and radio appearances, as well as lecturing on college campuses. Dr. Ruth lives in New York City.

Comprehensive in its more than 250 entries, this study balances technical, psychological, and emotional issues; stays objective on the culture wars about values; and draws on expertise from over 70 contributors. Tailored for a public library readership, especially high school and college students, the book's illustrations, glossary, and bibliography enhance its value. However, this new "revised edition" does not appear much revised from the 1994 original (LJ 7/94). True, an entirely new (and very good) entry on impotence describes Viagra and UPRIMA a new drug being tested. But entries on abortion, birth control, and RU-486, plus scores of others examined, seem completely unchanged from the first edition. The glossary and bibliography are also not updated: for example, "Sex Studies and Surveys" lacks Robert T. Michael and others' major Sex in America (Little, Brown, 1994). Libraries with the first edition may decide not to buy this one, since information on Viagra is everywhere. However, any library without the first edition, or needing an additional copy, should buy the cheaper paper edition. Human Sexuality: An Encyclopedia is also very good but more suited to academic libraries. Martha Cornog, Philadelphia
