Veteran King chronicler George Beahm thoroughly examines Stephen King's life as a celebrity and a publishing phenomenon who has published more than forty books--from CARRIE to WIZARD AND GLASS (the fourth Dark Tower novel). Complete with new photos taken especially for this edition and reprints of little-seen King pictures unearthed from archives, this book is a textual and visual treat and a "must" for king's millions of readers.

From Publishers Weekly:
Beahm's (The Stephen King Story; The Stephen King Companion) fawning biography of Stephen King doesn't offer any thrills or chills?or objectivity, either?but it is an undeniable tribute to the bestselling horror writer. Beahm's narrative traces King's life from his fatherless childhood in blue-collar Durham, Maine, selling dittoed editions of his stories, to the $2500 he earned in 1974 for Carrie, his first novel, to the $2 million he just received on signing for Bag of Bones. While Beahm's devotional attitude sheds few new insights ("This was not just any writer... but the biggest writer in the country"), and while he did not apparently interview King himself, his book tempts fans with the occasional trivial morsel: inspiration for The Shining came while the author vacationed with his wife in a creepy hotel; the death of the family cat led to Pet Semetary. Although Beahm's valentine won't take the bite out of King's critics (King has described his own work as "the literary equivalent of a Big Mac and large fries"), it does succeed in shedding light on King's generosity, the library and youth projects he has financed within his hometown of Bangor.

From Library Journal:
This unauthorized biography is aimed at devotees of King and those interested in collecting his works (first editions command notoriously high prices). Beahm provides the most up-to-date history of the best-selling horror writer; existing biographies include the authorized biography by Douglas E. Winter (Stephen King: The Art of Darkness, 1986) and Beahm's previous biography (The Stephen King Story, Andrews & McMeel, 1992). An appendix gives additional information, such as other books by Beahm about King, fan publications, web sites, information on collecting, and frequently asked questions (e.g., where one can write to King). This chatty, inexpensive volume is recommended for public libraries with avid King fans or academic libraries with comprehensive sf collections.?Janice E. Braun, Mills Coll., Oakland, CA
