A large portion of the atlas describes ancient, classical, and medieval civilizations, with entire sections devoted to human origins, early cultures, the earliest civilizations, and classical Eurasia. The fifth edition includes a section on global civilization (the 20th century), with entries for world economy, global environment, and communications.
