A Roman Matron's Epitaph
Hospes, quod deico paullum est; asta ac pellege.
Heic est sepulcrum hau pulcrum pulcrai feminae:
Nomen parentes nominarunt Claudiam
Suom mareitum corde deilexit souo.
Gnatos duos creavit: horunc alterum
In terra linquit, alium sub terra locat.
Sermone lepido tum autem incessu commodo
Domum servavit, lanam fecit. Dixi. Abei.
Strangers, what I have to say is brief,
So pause and read.
This rude tomb holds a fair woman's bones.
Named Claudia by her parents, she loved her husband in her heart
And bore two sons, one of whom yet lives.
Refined in speech, gentle in manner,
She cared for her home, spun wool.
Farewell.

Parvulus hic situs est. Vixit tris usque per annos
Inque novem menses invalidosq(ue) dies
Nomine [Ch]rusoglos[s}us, amabilis, utque erat infans
Flebilis et misere raptus ad inferias.
A little child lies here.
He lived three whole years, and into the ninth month
When days of illness struck him.
His name was Chrusoglossus and we loved him.
While still a child he was
borne with tears and sorrow
To the nether world.
