Lee captures the spirit of Andre Derain, a multitalented artist who was at the forefront of the artistic revolutions of Fauvism and Cubism. She portrays him not as a peripheral artist of the early 20th century but as a leader whose influence and camaraderie with Braque, Matisse, and Picasso led to a new dimension of artistic style and thinking. Throughout the fascinating text, the author gives insight into the career of a man who was equally noted for his book illustrations, etchings, lithographs, and set designs/costumes of ballet, as well as for being an avid collector of African sculpture and rare books. Also included is the catalog to a recent exhibition focusing on the artist's later works in terms of art and culture in the Western tradition organized by the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford. A worthy addition to any collection.
