Review:
The development of black history as an academic discipline is highlighted in this collection published by Howard University Press. Its thirteen essays were originally delivered between 1970 and 1987 in Howard's Rayford W. Logan lecture series, established to honor a distinguished historian and to provide a public forum for scholarship on the black experience. Contributors range from such well-known elder statesmen as John Hope Franklin and C. Vann Woodward through scholar-activists like Mary Francis Berry to professors whose work may be less familiar to general readers, but whose contributions have been no less significant. The articles are grouped in five categories: "Perspectives on the History of Africa," "Reinterpretation of Slavery and Reconstruction," "Racial Ideologies and Race Relations in United States History," "Me Uses of Biography," and "Content and Context in Historical Interpretation." Among the individual papers, John Blassingame's analysis of "Sambos and Rebels: The Character of the Southern Slave" continues to stand out almost two decades after its original appearance. A.L. Higginbotham on racism in American legal history and Mary Francis Berry on the military origins of the Thirteenth Amendment and its related civil-rights legislation establish the importance of institutions in structuring behavior. Frank M. Snowden's summary of "Black-White Relations in the Ancient Mediterranean World" is a striking reminder of the historically recent origins of color prejudice. Their consistently high levels of research and analysis are a tribute to the prestige of the lecture series. While several of the pieces have been published elsewhere or incorporated in larger works, none are so familiar or so readily available that their appearance in this collection is redundant. Libraries with limited holdings in black history will find this work a particularly useful addition to their collections, both for its own merits and as a springboard to future acquisitions. -- From Independent Publisher
