First published in Japan, this unusual picture book follows a Mongolian child through his first year. Born into a nomadic family, Jilu lies in a cradle inside the family ger (traditional yurt). When he begins to crawl, they pack the camels and move to their autumn quarters, then travel on to their winter campground. They tend their sheep and goats and, later, welcome friends to enjoy the holiday Tsagaan Sar. When spring comes, Jilu helps with the lambs. Back at the summer camp, he celebrates his first birthday. Baasansuren, who lives in Mongolia, writes from Jilu’s point of view, letting readers see the culture through the eyes of a child discovering his world for the first time. The central image of a round home is repeated effectively with different meanings in different contexts, while sensory images bring the settings to life.
