Review

A delightful book. David Yetman has spent twenty years as a trader to the Seri Indians who live in northern Mexico on the shores of the Gulf of California. In twenty sketches he recounts his friendships and adventures with these natives as well as his discoveries about their history and culture. The sketches are superb-graceful, funny, moving-and they cover most aspects that the white man is likely to observe about the lives of the Seris. A dark thread of impending extinction weaves through Yetman's account. The endangered species list of Seri culture includes sea turtles and fish; hunting-and-gathering as a healthy way of life; ironwood from which the Seris carve trade animals; natural dyes with which they color trade necklaces; and most important, their cultural integrity, threatened by the technology of outsiders. This book is entertaining, fascinating, significant. I would recommend it to anyone. -- From Independent Publisher
