Here is a collection of historic artictic portraits by early 1900's Santa Barbara photographers Carolyn and Edwin Gledhill, who operated the Gledhill Portraits photographic studio across from the famous waterfront Potter Hotel in 1907. From that prime location, they skilfully recorded many notable, and not so notable, personalities on their glass plate negatives. This collection provides photographic historians and enthusiasts alike with an exceptional example of "turn of the century" portrait photography. Also included in this book are reproductions of the first commercial color photographic, the Autochrome, introduced by the Gledhills in 1915.

From the Inside Flap:
Carolyn and Edwin Gledhill met in a bookstore in Santa Barbara, California, soon after their arrival from different areas of North America. It was their joint interest in photograpy that caused them to marry in 1907 after a brief courtship and to open "The Gledhill Portraits" studio across from the famous Potter Hotel. From their studio, they had access to many of the most notable personalities to come to Santa Barbara, where they skillfully recorded them on film. They rapidly gained the reputation of master photographers from the artistic posing and lighting of their subjects, and the creative processing of the resulting print. The collection in this book portrays the faces of many well known Santa Barbara residents and visitors. Turn the pages and meet artists Carl Oscar Borg and Edward Borein, author Upton Sinclair, philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, Mrs. Robert Louis Stevenson, aircraft manufacturer William Boeing, dancer Ruth St. Denis, and many other well known, and not so well known, Santa Barbara personalties.

Quarto. 124pp. 101 plates, mostly b&w, but some in color. Simply SIGNED by both DAVID AND KEITH GLEDHILL. Hint of spine fade to otherwise bright nice dust jacket. "Smile with the eyes," Edwin Gledhill frequently told his sitters. As one scholar has noted, there are rarely glimpses of teeth in the elegant portraits made by the Gledhills, husband and wife photographic partners. The Gledhills worked collaboratively; he arranged the sitter while she maneuvered the camera. Their images were largely Pictorialist in the soft-focus style of the day, and they photographed the wealthy vacationers and artistic community that thrived in Santa Barbara."- getty museum.
