Abell has been a National Geographic photographer for 20 years; Robert E. Gilka, who wrote the introduction, is the former director of photography there. The publication of this book coincides with Abell's retrospective exhibit at the International Center for Photography in New York City. Taken during assignments in Newfoundland, Japan, Russia, Montana, and the Galapagos Islands on subjects as diverse as canoeing, gardens, and the Shakers (in Maine, Massachusetts, and Kentucky), every one of these exquisite 35mm images is memorable. The same high quality extends to Abell's unaffected, lively essay. As Gilka observes, Abell has found the ideal compromise between art and journalism. His quietly elegant photographs evoke rather than explain. One unforgettable image shows pears ripening on the sill of a lace-curtained window in Moscow, with the Kremlin visible beyond. Photos are captioned with title, place, and year; Abell's notes about particular images are included in the back matter. This is highly recommended for photography collections.

Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. FIRST PRINTING. A hard-to-find/much-sought-after book. "For the past 20 years, National Geographic assignments have taken photographer Sam Abell from Newfoundland to Tierra del Fuego, from Leningrad to Japan. In each location, he has sought to show "that which in life is enduring, be it a landscape, a culture, or an idea." 'STAY THIS MOMENT' is a testimony to his success, a midcareer retrospective of the works of one of America's most talented contemporary photographers. In image after exquisite image, Abell reveals his mastery of light and composition and his fascination with the mute eloquence of objects-pears ripening on a window sill overlooking the Kremlin, glimpsed through a lace curtain, flowers hanging from the beams of a ceiling in a Shaker community in Sabbathday Lake, Maine. At home in both urban and rural settings, he discovers unexpected beauty in the coils of a black-and-white water snake draped over a wooden canoe paddle on the Missouri River, and in the twist of pink neon on a theater sign in Waycross, Georgia." Book contains an Introduction by Robert E. Gilka and a 4 page autobiographical essay by Abell. 171 pages. 110 full-color, full-page photographic illustrations with captions and commentary on each. Slight shelf rubbing to DJ cover, elsewise a fine copy. A VIVIDLY STUNNING PUBLICATION! LMBC4. Seller Inventory # 003898
