Synopsis

This is the story of Tristan Jones' sailing expedition in the Arctic, undertaken after his discharge from the Navy, apparently unfit for more seagoing. He converted a small yacht, Cresswell", to a cruising ketch and started sailing, determined to sail farther north than anyone else. He set out from Iceland accompanied only by Nelson, his one-eyed, three-legged dog. Jones spent two winters in suspense and danger in this bleak polar region. Finally, when the ice shifted, crushing "Cresswell" like a matchbox, Jones had to deal with the horror of possible death."

About the Author:

Tristan Jones is one of the best-known authors of sailing stories writing today. A Welshman, he left school at age 14 to work on sailing barges and spent the rest of his life at sea as a Navy seaman, a delivery skipper, and as a daring adventurer in search of new seagoing challenges. The author of 16 books, Jones lived in Phuket, Thailand for 10 years before his death in 1995.
