Mrs. Alvera Mickelsen received her academic training in journalism at the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. She has been a practicing journalist for years, with a particular concern for foreign missions. She has taught journalism at Wheaton College and Bethel College, St. Paul.

Mrs. Mickelsen is now retired.

Prayer letters are to missionary combat what night vision capabilities were to U.S. armor in the Gulf War. They cut through the darkness to bring the target sharply into focus. But our letters won't work if we don't do a better job of training people how to write them. Both sending churches and agencies could do more to insist on upgrading the quality of our letters.
