This story takes place at an isolated peninsula located on a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It was on this insignificant splinter of land that people who were deathly ill and free of any crimes against nature or mankind were banished to spend their lives segregated from all civilized society. Forced from their families and stripped of dignity, these men, women and children came from all races, religions and walks of life.

Over the last 130 years there have been many strangers who came freely to these lonely shores and brought compassion, assistance and self-respect. Foremost among those was one whose destiny it was to achieve greatness by his humble efforts to relieve and ultimately share the pain of his fellow man. This Roman Catholic priest is known to the world as Father Joseph Damien deVeuster.

As the last of his people and the 20th Century fade into memory, the human tragedy that occurred here must be left as a reminder for all time of man's injustice to his own. The chronicle of suffering and loneliness within these pages belongs to each and every one of those exiled to the Kalaupapa Peninsula over the decades, and it is for them that this story is told....

From the Publisher:
The Lands of Father Damien has been widely acclaimed as the most outstanding combined historical and pictorial book of its kind that deals with the tiny settlement of Kalaupapa and those who have came there to help. This hardcover book is a must for those who have ever heard of Father Damien, Kalaupapa, Molokai or Hawaii.
From the Author:
During its peak in the late 1800s, the Kalaupapa Peninsula was home to 1200 men, women and children who were taken away from their loved ones and everything they held dear in life. In the past 130 years, there have been thousands of afflicted banished to Kalaupapa's rocky lands and left there to spend their remaining days.

Today, there are very few patients left at the settlement, and all of them are well into their golden years. As their numbers dwindle more with each passing year, the final sunset is rapidly approaching the land as it has existed for decades. At the time of this writing, there is just a little over 50 people left in this area that held so much pain and suffering. The Lands of Father Damien was created with respect and consolation that Kalaupapa's living, as well as those who lie within its earth, will be remembered, if no where else, through the pages of this book.

Aloha nui, James H. Brocker
