This innovative and provocative new book redefines what it means to deliver case management.services. It critiques current practices that frustrate professionals and service users alike, and offers a new perspective intended to make this work more rewarding and helpful for clients. It abandons the "victim psychology" and "charity approaches" still so prevalent in the health and human services, and replaces them with strategies intended to increase clients' and professionals' personal power. The book includes clients' perspectives, outlines empowerment theories as a framework for practice, provides practical information on how to develop an empowerment plan, addresses ethical issues, including the identification and prevention of compassion fatigue and burnout, discusses how clients and case managers can help to build community capacity, and includes effective advocacy strategies and tactics. Those who have used this manual to improve their practice report more successful outcomes even with formerly "resistant" clients, as well as a higher degree of professional satisfaction. It should be required reading for nurses, social workers, community mental health and addictions workers, and those working with newcomers, people with disabilities, and women who have survived domestic violence.
